Borders Railway receives recognition for sustainability performance

The Borders Railway project team is celebrating after receiving an ‘excellent’ CEEQUAL award rating in recognition of its outstanding environmental design credentials.

The prestigious award recognises outstanding performance for sustainable civil engineering and infrastructure projects across the UK. It takes into consideration elements such as how a project helps conserve natural habitats, how it will sustainably serve passengers as well as its green credentials once completed.

The Borders Railway project has also just been awarded an ‘excellent’ rating from the Considerate Construction Scheme, a national initiative set up to recognise achievement in construction.

This award took into account a number of factors, including - the appearance of the site, what it is doing to help protect the local environment, the project’s work with the community, its focus on securing the safety of employees and the public as well as its record for caring for its workforce.

Hugh Wark, project director, Network Rail, said: “We are really pleased to achieve these two accolades. They recognise the hard work that goes into the project behind the scenes in dealing with environmental, community and safety issues but also underline the quality of work that our contractors are putting into building the railway every day.

“The CEEQUAL process was an integral part of the procurement, design and construction of the Borders Railway project.  From the outset the design team has sought to reuse any excess materials effectively and seek opportunities to minimise off-site disposal. For example, materials from excavation works might be used as sub-soil for road building, to stabilise slopes, retain walls or for the new railway bed.

“Construction of the railway continues to make good progress and we remain as committed as ever towards ensuring that we work with local communities wherever possible to ensure people know what is happening and how the works may affect them.”

Nissar Mohammed, BAM project director, added: "We are delighted to receive these two awards. This result is testimony to the hard work, professional approach and dedication that our teams are demonstrating on Borders Railway."
