Space for Growth
Development and Investment Opportunities
Through the Borders Railway Blueprint partnership, Scottish Borders, Midlothian and Edinburgh Councils, together with the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Visit Scotland and ScotRail, are fully committed to maximising the economic benefits of the railway and to attracting new investment into the area.
Over the next few years, the Edinburgh city region is expected to see significant economic and population growth, along with rising tourism volumes, a diversifying business base and increased demand for skills. The Borders Railway connects key housing, mixed-use and employment sites to Edinburgh City Centre and therefore creates fantastic new opportunities for businesses and investors to take advantage of the growing markets.
The £5.2million Galashiels Transport Interchange is an excellent example of commercial development built in direct response to the opportunities presented by the Borders Railway. Opened in time for the start of the rail service in September 2015, the award winning landmark building provides modern office space and conference facilities above a new local transport hub.
Midlothian and the Scottish Borders are amazing places to live and work, offering an excellent quality of life, education, health care, low crime and affordable housing, and through the Borders Railway are more connected to Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland than ever before.
The Railway corridor is located within a Tier 3 area, so small to medium companies (SMEs) are eligible for up to 20% support in Regional Selective Assistance.
